Amazon Seller Insurance for Sellers in Italy

Italian coffee, food, design and fashion brands sell to US shoppers through Amazon.com. Here is where an Italian RC prodotti policy stops, what Amazon’s US rule asks for, and how to prepare a quote.

Reading the territory clause in an Italian RC prodotti policy

Italian product liability policies ask the policyholder to choose a territory when the contract is written. The common options run from Italy alone to Europe, then “Mondo intero escluso USA/Canada” and finally “Mondo intero compreso USA/Canada”. If your policy was set up when you exported only within Europe, check which option it names, since the third is a common choice for European exporters.

Italian brokers say the same thing in plain terms: RC prodotti cover usually reaches beyond Italy, but exports to the USA, Mexico and Canada need a specific extension. That extension is priced separately, and a claim from a US customer before it was added sits outside the policy.

Amazon then asks for more than the territory. It wants $1 million per occurrence and in the aggregate, Amazon added as additional insured by endorsement, and an insurer rated A- or better, shown on an English certificate. For an Italian seller, a separate US product liability policy is usually the cleaner way to meet those points, and we place one for companies based in Italy.

When Amazon’s rule applies to an Italian brand

Amazon counts gross proceeds on Amazon.com, not on amazon.it. Once a month’s US proceeds pass $10,000, the seller has 30 days to put commercial liability cover in place, and Amazon can ask for proof earlier. The full list of what Amazon reviews is on our Amazon seller insurance requirements page.

From November 2, 2026, Amazon’s enhanced-safety categories need the policy whatever the sales figure. Trade reports of Amazon’s notice name children’s products, cosmetics, ingestibles and lithium-battery goods, and say the list reaches small kitchen appliances such as coffee makers. An Italian maker of espresso machines or milk frothers selling a few units a month on Amazon.com now needs cover from the first listing.

Confirm the deductible rule shown in Seller Central on the day you bind, and make sure the certificate states the deductible you chose. A figure that is missing from the certificate is an easy reason for Amazon to send it back.

Coffee, olive oil and food: FDA steps underwriters expect

Food brands carry an extra layer of US paperwork. A facility that makes, processes, packs or holds food for US consumers registers with FDA and renews that registration every other year, and each shipment of imported food needs prior notice to FDA before it arrives. Underwriters ask for the registration number early, because it tells them the import chain is in order.

They also ask how each lot is coded and traced, what the English label says about allergens, and how you would pull a batch of pasta sauce, pesto or panettone from Amazon’s warehouses if a problem surfaced. Ingestibles fall under Amazon’s November 2026 category rule, so a small olive oil producer with modest US sales needs the policy as well. Our supplements and ingestibles guide covers the questions in more detail.

Coffee roasters face a quieter version of the same questions. Roasted beans and capsules are food for FDA purposes, and a capsule machine sold beside them brings in the appliance questions above, so list both on the application when you sell them together.

Design, fashion and leather goods

Italian brands also sell furniture, lighting, eyewear, bags and shoes on Amazon.com. Most carry lower injury risk than food or appliances, but the insurance rule still applies once sales pass the threshold, and some lines raise their own questions.

Lamps and anything else that plugs in draw questions about US electrical listings and plug types. Furniture raises tip-over and weight-limit questions, especially for dressers and shelving that end up in children’s rooms. Leather goods raise few injury questions, so the application is usually short.

Glass and ceramic tableware, from blown glass to hand-painted plates, brings questions about breakage and, for glazed pieces that touch food, lead and cadmium testing. Keep those lab reports in the product file so they travel with the application.

Recall cover: “ritiro” and the US policy

Some Italian RC prodotti policies include a recall extension, called ritiro, that reimburses the costs of withdrawing a defective product even when nobody was hurt. A US product liability policy is built for injury and property damage claims, and recall costs sit outside it unless you add cover for them.

If your Italian policy already includes ritiro, ask whether it reaches products sold in the US. If it does not, look at separate recall cover for the US channel, especially for food and appliances. Our product recall insurance guide explains the options.

A recall plan also strengthens the liability application. A short document that names who decides on a withdrawal, how Amazon is told, and how US buyers are reached shows an underwriter that a small defect is likely to stay small, and it costs nothing to write.

Paperwork from an Italian company

For the application we ask for a recent visura camerale, your partita IVA, Amazon.com sales for the last twelve months, the product list with ASINs and your claims history. The named insured must match your seller account exactly: “Esempio S.r.l.” and “Esempio Srl” can be enough for Amazon to reject a certificate, so copy the name from Seller Central.

Tell us who acts as importer of record for your US shipments. A June 2026 executive order asks US Customs and Border Protection to tighten its rules for foreign importers, including bonds and broker requirements, and your customs broker can tell you what that means for your entries today. A 9 a.m. call in Milan is midnight in Seattle, so most of this work runs by email: send the documents before you close for the day, and read our replies over your morning espresso.

How Mithril1 helps Italian sellers

We work with hundreds of Amazon sellers. When a home broker cannot add the USA/Canada extension, or the extension does not meet Amazon’s points, we place US product liability for companies based in Italy, matched to Amazon’s requirement, and walk you through the certificate before you upload it.

Send your visura, product list and Amazon.com sales through our contact page to begin. The Amazon seller insurance hub lists every guide in this series, including the international sellers overview and our certificate guide.

A few useful answers

Common questions

Is "Mondo intero escluso USA/Canada" enough for Amazon.com sales?

No. That territory leaves out the United States, where your Amazon.com customers are. You need either a USA/Canada extension that also meets Amazon’s endorsement and limit points, or a separate US policy.

Do I need FDA food facility registration to get a quote for food products?

Underwriters ask for it early, because a facility that makes, packs or holds food for US consumers registers with FDA and renews every other year. Have the number ready with your product list.

Are espresso machines covered by Amazon's November 2026 rule?

Trade reports of Amazon’s notice say the enhanced-safety list reaches small kitchen appliances such as coffee makers. Check your listings against the category list in Seller Central, and plan for the policy before the first US sale.

Can the policy name my Italian company and my US distributor?

Yes. Tell us how the distributor fits into the chain, whether it buys from you or sells on your behalf, and what your agreement asks for. The policy names your Italian company, and the distributor can be added where the agreement calls for it.

Does the US policy pay for a product recall?

A US product liability policy is built for injury and property damage claims, and recall costs need their own cover. Ask whether your Italian ritiro extension reaches US sales, or look at separate recall cover.
