Let’s talk insurance.

Type of insurance

Please do not include Social Security numbers, payment information or medical records.

The type of cleaning matters

Office cleaning, residential work and specialist surface treatments can involve different exposures. Describe the premises, tasks and any chemicals or equipment used. Include work outside normal interiors rather than assuming it fits a standard janitorial description.

Customer property is not the same as your equipment

Accidental damage at a customer site, loss of your own tools and employee injury are separate questions. Ask about property being worked on and any care, custody or control restrictions. If a customer requests a bond, discuss it separately; a bond is not a replacement for liability insurance.

Coverage to consider

General liability: Customer injuries and damage to another person’s property raise liability questions. Review the covered operations, limits and exclusions.

Workers’ compensation: Employee injuries require their own discussion. Explain the duties performed and review applicable requirements before hiring or changing work.

Commercial auto: Business driving should reflect vehicle ownership, drivers and use. Do not assume a personal policy or premises policy addresses every business trip.

Coverage depends on the policy’s terms, limits and exclusions. An inquiry or online quote does not put coverage in force.

Common questions

Does general liability cover every surface damaged while cleaning?

No. Property being worked on and other exclusions need review before assuming a particular loss is covered.

Should I disclose pressure washing or other exterior work?

Yes. List those activities separately from routine interior cleaning.

Is a janitorial bond the same as liability insurance?

No. They address different obligations and should be evaluated separately.
