How to Save on Commercial Auto Insurance

Commercial auto is one of the hardest lines for insurers to price profitably, which makes your drivers and vehicles the center of every quote. This guide covers the controls a business can put in place and how each one shows up in the premium.

Why insurers look so closely at your drivers

Insurance Journal, reporting AM Best’s annual results, says commercial auto lost about $4.9 billion on underwriting in 2024 and was still in the red in 2025, with a loss of about $1.9 billion. When a line loses money year after year, underwriters lean hard on the details they can measure: who drives, what they drive, where the vehicles sleep at night and how far they travel.

That pressure works in your favor when your file is strong. The Insurance Information Institute’s small-business guide says the best way to keep business auto premiums down is to avoid accidents, and most of what follows is about showing an underwriter how your business does that. Start with the commercial auto coverage page if you need the basics first.

Check every driver, before hiring and after

The III recommends hiring drivers with clean records, having employees sign motor vehicle report authorization forms so you can check their driving records every year, and never handing a vehicle to a poor driver, even for a quick errand. Put that into a written driver policy: the record you accept, the violations that disqualify someone, who may take each vehicle home and what happens after a ticket or crash.

California offers a tool many small employers overlook. The DMV’s Employer Pull Notice program lets an employer monitor the records of people who drive for it; the DMV sends a record when an enrolled driver has a new conviction, failure to appear, accident, suspension or revocation, and once a year on the enrollment date. Employers must enroll drivers the Vehicle Code requires, such as those holding commercial Class A or B driving privileges, and DMV’s program requirements allow other drivers to be enrolled with their written consent on form INF 1101.

Continuous monitoring answers the question an underwriter cares about most: would you know if a driver’s record changed in the middle of the policy year? The DMV now requires employers in the program to handle it electronically, and to remove drivers promptly when they leave. Injured drivers also land on workers’ compensation, so see how to save on workers’ comp for that side.

Driving habits, phones and telematics

The III also suggests a written policy on phones, texting and hands-free devices, annual refresher courses for drivers, regular vehicle maintenance and a culture that does not push drivers to rush. Schedules that pack too many stops into a day show up in claims, so build realistic routes and let drivers report delays without penalty.

Telematics turns those habits into data. One national commercial auto insurer, Progressive Commercial, advertises a minimum 5% discount for enrolling vehicles in its telematics program, with a renewal rate personalized to how, where and how much the vehicles are driven, and possible renewal savings between 8% and 20%. The same page notes the offer is not available in all states, so ask whether any telematics program is offered on California policies before counting on one.

Dash cameras serve a different purpose. They rarely change the rate by themselves, but footage of what really happened can settle a disputed accident quickly, and fewer, smaller claims are what move a premium over time.

Describe vehicles, garaging and radius accurately

IRMI notes that auto exposure is measured per unit, so each vehicle carries its own charge. The III adds that size, age, theft rating and safety rating shape each vehicle’s coverage, and that insurers can charge more for certain business uses. A light pickup used for estimates is rated differently from a box truck making deliveries, so describe each one as it is actually used.

The garaging address and the radius of operation matter as much as the vehicle. List where each vehicle is parked overnight and the farthest it regularly travels. Reporting a quieter garaging location or a shorter radius than the real one can lower a quote and then cause serious trouble after a crash; reporting a longer radius than you need simply wastes money.

Keep the schedule current. Tell your agent the day you sell, retire or replace a vehicle, rather than paying for it until renewal. When employees use their own cars or you rent vehicles now and then, our guide to hired and non-owned auto explains how that exposure is covered without scheduling those cars.

Physical damage, deductibles and older vehicles

Physical damage coverage, meaning comprehensive and collision, pays to repair or replace your own vehicles. The III notes that it is often worth buying only for newer or more valuable vehicles, which can cut costs on an older fleet. Compare each vehicle’s current value with the yearly cost of its physical damage coverage and its deductible; a financed or leased vehicle usually has to keep it under the loan or lease terms.

Raising the deductible is the other lever the III lists, and the CDI notes that a higher deductible lowers the rate while warning against one large enough to strain the business. Comprehensive and collision deductibles can usually be set separately, so a business can carry a higher collision deductible while keeping comprehensive lower for theft, glass and vandalism.

Bundle, pay in full and protect the layer above

The III’s list of ways to save includes bundling commercial auto with other policies, paying the bill in full and asking about a business experience discount for companies that have operated for three or more years. Ask which of those apply to your quote, and whether the insurer writing your Business Owner’s Policy or general liability also writes auto.

Employees who run errands in their own cars create liability for the business. The III says non-owned auto coverage on a business auto policy sits excess over the employee’s personal auto coverage, and suggests requiring employees to carry commercial auto coverage on the vehicles they use for work, with proof collected every year. Keep that proof in the personnel file alongside the driving record.

Contracts often ask for auto limits higher than a primary policy carries. An umbrella above the auto policy can reach those totals, and its price follows the same drivers and vehicles described here. For every line in one place, see how to save on business insurance.

A few useful answers

Common questions

Can I enroll employees who drive their own cars in California’s Employer Pull Notice program?

DMV’s program requirements allow employers to enroll drivers the Vehicle Code does not require, with the driver’s consent on the Authorization for Release of Driver Record Information, form INF 1101, or a document with similar language.

Can a telematics program raise a commercial auto premium at renewal?

Programs that set a renewal rate from driving data can move the price in either direction. Before enrolling, ask how the data is scored, whether California policies are eligible and how the insurer uses location and speed information.

When does it make sense to drop collision coverage on an older work truck?

When the yearly cost of collision and its deductible approach the truck’s current value, the coverage buys little. Check the truck’s value, any loan or lease terms and whether the business could replace it from cash before deciding.

Why does the garaging address matter on a commercial auto policy?

Insurers rate vehicles partly on where they are parked overnight, because theft, vandalism and traffic vary by area. List the real overnight location of each vehicle and update it when a vehicle moves to a new yard or an employee’s home.

How soon should a sold vehicle come off my commercial auto policy?

Tell your agent the day ownership changes, with the date and the vehicle identification number. Premium is usually charged until the vehicle is removed, so waiting until renewal pays for a vehicle the business no longer owns.
